Fear can be an isolating experience, and dental fear is no exception. So if you feel anxiety about your next trip to the dentist, the first thing you should know is that you are not alone. Dental anxiety is relatively common. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that about half of Americans feel some degree of nervousness at the dentist, with 20 percent of those people experiencing extreme dental fear.
And though fear can feel extremely unpleasant, it can have even more severe consequences for your teeth. If your dental anxiety prevents routine dental visits, progressive conditions like tooth decay may occur. These conditions cause dental pain, which may promote further avoidance until what may have been a minor issue becomes a serious problem.
Our mission at Needville Family Dentistry is to stop that vicious cycle. Dr. Jennifer Kunkel and her team offer treatments to address dental anxiety, diminishing your fear so that you can receive the care your body needs.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry aims to help our Needville patients overcome their initial fear of dental visits. We accomplish this goal by using treatments that effectively ‘mute’ that which is nerve-wracking so that you can feel that our office is a safe space with people who genuinely care for your well-being.
Two Types of Anxiety Relief Available in the Rosenberg, TX Area
We offer two treatments depending on your unique needs. The first is nitrous oxide, A.K.A “laughing gas.” You inhale this odorless gas through a comfortable mask and will feel its relaxing effects within minutes. A benefit of nitrous oxide is that it leaves no drowsy after-effects once you’re no longer inhaling it. We finish your treatment with a dose of pure oxygen to clear your head and allow you to get back to your day.
Where you may want deeper sedation than nitrous alone can provide, Dr. Kunkel will prescribe oral conscious sedation, where we administer medication when you arrive for your appointment. Once it takes effect, you will begin to feel very calm.
This type of sedation may last for a few hours, which is ample time for us to complete your procedure while you remain comfortable. Some of our patients become so relaxed that they drift off to sleep! And because the effects are more pronounced, you will need someone to drive you safely to and from our dental office with this option.
