A root canal is a pain-relieving treatment that can save a natural tooth from further infection, loss, or extraction. Though people assume root canal therapy is painful, it is the infection in the tooth that causes pain and discomfort. Root canal therapy treats and relieves the pain!

What Is a Root Canal?

Root canal therapy, also referred to as a “root canal,” involves the following:

  • An oral examination, including x-rays
  • Isolating and numbing the tooth
  • Creating an access point in the tooth
  • Removing bacteria and the infected tooth pulp
  • Cleaning and disinfecting the tooth
  • Shaping the tooth’s root canals
  • Filling the tooth with a flexible, durable material
  • Sealing the tooth with a dental filling or crown

A root canal can restore your tooth’s function, appearance, and comfort in no time.

How Do You Know If You Need a Root Canal?

Common signs you might need a root canal are:

  • Tooth pain
  • Facial swelling
  • Hypersensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks
  • Tender, swollen gums
  • Discoloration or darkening of the tooth
  • Drainage from the tooth

Some people may not have symptoms, so you must visit your dentist for routine exams and cleaning. During these regularly-scheduled visits, the dentist checks for signs of infection, disease, and more so you can prevent these problems from occurring.
